The Aleut, who call themselves Unangan, have lived along the Aleutian Island chain for at least nine thousand years, in one of the most volcanically active and meteorologically extreme environments on earth.
The Unangan keep a creation story involving Raven and his grandmother. Raven and his grandmother existed before the world as it is now. Raven was relentlessly curious, and his curiosity drove him into every corner of the world and forced him to make everything more complicated than he had found it.
His grandmother was the counterweight. Where he created chaos, she created order. Where he made the tides run too fast, she slowed them. Where he made the winds too strong, she negotiated with them.
The world as it is — the imperfect, beautiful, terrifyingly powerful world of the Aleutian Islands — is the result of their argument, which continues to this day.
Cultural Significance
The Unangan creation mythology reflects a maritime worldview in which the sea is not a barrier but a road, and the primary creative forces are the forces that govern ocean and weather. Their oral traditions survived through conditions that might have extinguished a less resilient culture.
